Historic Colfax Aims for Up to $120K in Levitt Grant to Bring Free Concerts Downtown

After months of tireless work, strategic planning, and fierce competition against hundreds of cities nationwide, the Historic Colfax Downtown Association is proud to announce that Colfax CA Downtown Revitalization has advanced to the public voting round for the prestigious Levitt AMP Music Series Grant.

This isn’t just another grant opportunity—this is a historic moment for our town. Only 100 cities in the entire country made it this far. Last year, just 33 communities received this funding, making our advancement an extraordinary achievement.

If we win, Colfax could receive up to $40,000 per year for three years in matching funds from the Levitt Foundation. That means as much as $120,000 in total funding to host up to ten free concerts annually—bringing world-class live music, new visitors, and fresh energy to our historic downtown.

The impact goes beyond music. This grant represents an opportunity to reignite our local economy, boost tourism, and create lasting cultural experiences that will bring our community closer together.

How Colfax CA is revitalizing its downtown with live music

Imagine warm summer evenings where families, neighbors, and visitors gather under the stars to enjoy top-tier live music—for free. Picture our streets alive with local food vendors, artisans, and businesses buzzing with customers drawn by the events. That’s what this grant could deliver.

Over the three-year funding period, these concerts would:

  • Drive Economic Growth: Increased foot traffic means more business for local restaurants, shops, and lodging.
  • Boost Tourism: Colfax could attract visitors from across Placer County and beyond.
  • Enhance Community Pride: Public spaces would become vibrant gathering places that bring our diverse community together.
  • Preserve and Showcase Local Culture: Each event would highlight Colfax’s rich history while building new traditions for future generations.

The Road to the Final Round

Getting to this stage wasn’t easy. To pass the first round, our team had to:

  • Create a comprehensive event budget that detailed every dollar’s purpose.
  • Design an official event logo as if the concerts were already happening.
  • Develop a full-scale marketing plan to promote the events and maximize attendance.
  • Collect numerous letters of support from community members, nonprofits, and local leaders to prove that Colfax truly wants—and deserves—this opportunity.

This effort took nearly 100 hours of dedicated work and meticulous strategy, positioning Colfax as a competitive contender among much larger cities.

A Call to Action: Community Support Needed

Now comes the most important step—public voting.
The voting period runs from September 5–15, 2025, and the Levitt Foundation has already sent us $1,500 to promote community engagement during these ten days. But that’s just the beginning—winning depends entirely on how many votes we can rally.

We’re calling this an “all-hands-on-deck moment” for Colfax.

Some doubters—outside our community—once told us we had no chance. But here we are, proving them wrong. Now we just have to cross the finish line together.

How We’re Mobilizing Colfax

We plan to host a community meeting at City Hall to bring together:

  • Local nonprofits
  • City of Colfax
  • Business owners
  • Residents of all ages
  • Anyone passionate about Colfax’s future

The meeting will focus on:

  1. Community Outreach Plans – Reaching every household and business in Colfax.
  2. Social Media Campaigns – Leveraging Facebook, Instagram, and local groups to spread the word fast.
  3. Vote Collection Strategies – Making it easy and convenient for every supporter to cast their vote.

We already have a framework for this campaign, but we need voices, hands, and hearts from across the community to make it happen.

Our Mission: Breathing New Life into Downtown Colfax

The Historic Colfax Downtown Association’s mission is clear:

To breathe new life into downtown Colfax by honoring its history, uplifting its people, and creating spaces where community can truly take root.

Colfax is a town built on grit and rooted in history—a place where stories still matter. We believe true revitalization happens when those stories are preserved, when neighbors are connected, and when every person feels like they are part of that legacy.

With this grant, we can take a giant step toward transforming Colfax into a bustling, connected, and economically strong hub in Placer County—one that honors the past while building an exciting future.

Ways to support Colfax CA during the Levitt Grant voting period

  • Mark Your Calendar: Voting runs September 5–15, 2025.
  • Spread the Word: Tell friends, family, and colleagues—every vote matters.
  • Join the Meeting: Help us refine our outreach plan and get involved.
  • Follow Us on Social Media: Stay updated on voting instructions and events.

Together, we can make Colfax a shining example of how small towns can achieve big dreams.

Colfax stands on the brink of something transformative. Winning the Levitt AMP Music Series Grant means more than just concerts—it’s about revitalization, community pride, and economic opportunity. We’ve come this far against all odds. Now, with your help, we can take the final step and secure a future filled with music, connection, and prosperity for our historic downtown.

O’Reilly Auto Parts Set to Break Ground in Colfax, CA

The Historic Colfax Downtown Association is proud to welcome O’Reilly Auto Parts as the newest addition to our growing business community. Approved by the City Council on July 24, 2024, the new store will be located at 781 South Auburn Street and will feature a 6,890-square-foot retail space on a 0.768-acre lot.

Construction will soon be underway, marking an exciting step forward for Colfax’s commercial corridor. Once complete, the store will provide a convenient source for automotive parts and supplies—serving local residents, mechanics, and travelers alike.

A Welcome Addition to Our Town

Colfax has always been a community where tradition meets progress. The arrival of O’Reilly Auto Parts fits right into that spirit, offering modern convenience while contributing to the economic health of our town.

The store’s location on Auburn Street, next to the Colfax Best Western Hotel, ensures high visibility and easy access, and its design will include landscaping and features that complement the surrounding area. As a brand with more than 6,400 stores across the U.S., Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Canada, O’Reilly’s presence signals confidence in Colfax’s potential for growth.

About O’Reilly Auto Parts

O’Reilly Auto Parts began in Springfield, Missouri, in 1957 with only 13 team members. From day one, the company built its culture around respect—for employees, customers, business partners, and the communities they serve.

Today, O’Reilly is the dominant auto parts retailer in its market areas, offering thousands of products and employing knowledgeable staff who provide hands-on service. Their expansion into Colfax, CA continues a long tradition of community engagement and customer care.

Boosting the Local Economy

The new store will bring both short-term and long-term economic benefits:

  • Jobs during construction and store operations
  • Increased traffic to nearby businesses
  • Sales tax revenue to support city services

Local repair shops and automotive enthusiasts will benefit from faster access to parts and supplies, helping them serve customers more efficiently.

Looking Ahead to Opening Day

Once the store is complete, we anticipate a grand opening celebration that will bring together city leaders, O’Reilly representatives, and the Colfax community. This will be more than just a ribbon-cutting—it will be a moment to celebrate growth, opportunity, and the shared future of our town.

The Historic Colfax Downtown Association invites everyone to join us in welcoming O’Reilly Auto Parts to our community. We look forward to seeing their green-and-white sign become a familiar part of Auburn Street and to building a strong relationship with this new neighbor.

📍Prime Drive-Thru Lot for Lease in Colfax, CA: A Rare Opportunity for Franchise Growth

At the Historic Colfax Downtown Association (HCDA), we’re not just preserving the past—we’re actively shaping the future of our town. That’s why we’re thrilled to share a unique opportunity for franchise owners and quick-service restaurant (QSR) developers: a high-visibility, drive-thru approved lot located at the roundabout in the heart of Colfax, California. If you’re considering a drive-thru lot for lease, Colfax CA is where history meets modern opportunity.

🚗 Location, Visibility, Access
This lot sits at a prime location near the I-80 on/off ramps at the Colfax junction (JCT. RTE. 174 NORTH), which sees over 42,000 vehicles per day, according to Caltrans. Whether travelers are heading to Lake Tahoe, Truckee, or returning from the mountains, they pass directly through Colfax—often seeking fast, convenient food and coffee options. With only two gas stations and no major fast-food drive-thru restaurants available between Colfax and Truckee, this site represents the last full-service stop before entering a 50+ mile stretch of limited options. Your brand could fill a critical market gap and become a go-to destination for both commuters and tourists.

  • Zoned and pre-approved for drive-thru use in this desirable lot for lease in Colfax CA.
  • Located in a high-traffic corridor
  • Ideal ingress and egress for efficient vehicle flow
  • Highly visible from the highway and roundabout

🏗️ Site-Ready and Flexible

This shovel-ready lot is fully equipped with utilities in place, a flat and buildable layout, and ample parking potential. The drive-thru lot for lease in Colfax CA is your chance to secure a prime location.

📊 Market and Demographics

Colfax may be small—with a population of just over 2,000—but it plays a big role in regional traffic:

  • Serves as the gateway to the Sierra Nevada
  • Popular with tourists, hikers, skiers, and summer campers
  • Proximity to Rollins Lake, Stevens Trail, and historic sites
  • Adjacent to residential neighborhoods and schools, making it a prime drive-thru lot for lease in Colfax CA.

There are currently two major quick-service drive-thru options in ColfaxMcDonald’s and Starbucks—both of which see steady traffic from commuters and travelers. Their presence demonstrates proven demand for fast, convenient dining, but the limited number of options underscores a clear market gap. With no other national QSRs or drive-thru restaurants between Colfax and Truckee, your brand could capture a high-volume audience in a largely underserved corridor.

Historic Colfax Theatre building on Main Street in Colfax CA

Own a Piece of Colfax History – The Iconic Colfax Theatre Is for Sale

When the golden age of cinema swept across America, towns like Colfax, California, found themselves hosting architectural jewels that would shape their identity for generations. Nestled in the heart of historic downtown Colfax, the Colfax Theatre isn’t just a building—it’s a memory machine. Since opening its doors in 1939, the Colfax Theatre has been the heartbeat of a small-town storybook narrative. Today, it’s not just a venue—it’s a living artifact, and now, the Colfax Theatre is for sale, looking for a new chapter.

A Glimpse Into Colfax CA’s Past

Located along the famed First Transcontinental Railroad and named after Schuyler Colfax, the 17th Vice President of the United States, Colfax CA has long been a crossroads of culture, commerce, and community. Its historic downtown, dotted with buildings that whisper stories of the Gold Rush and early 20th-century Americana, has evolved into a charming destination for visitors and locals alike.

Right at the gateway of this revitalized district stands the Colfax Theatre—bold, iconic, and enduring.

The Birth of a Community Icon

The year was 1939. While the world held its breath at the premiere of “Gone with the Wind” and “The Wizard of Oz,” Colfax proudly unveiled its own cinematic marvel: the Colfax Theatre. Built in the streamlined Art Deco style, the theatre mirrored the sophistication and hope of an era emerging from the shadows of the Great Depression.

With around 125 seats and glowing marquee, the theatre became more than a place to watch films—it was where stories came to life, romances bloomed, and generations connected.

Restoration and Renaissance: The 1980s Revival

Like many historic theatres across America, the Colfax Theatre faced decline in the latter half of the 20th century. But where some saw decay, the community saw potential. In the late 1980s, a group of passionate locals led a restoration initiative to bring back the building’s former glory. The project aimed to preserve its architectural charm while equipping it with modern amenities, effectively bridging the past and future.

This was not just a facelift. It was a full-hearted revival—turning the theatre into a space where live music, local theatre, and cinematic experiences could once again thrive.

Why the Colfax Theatre Matters Now More Than Ever

Downtown Colfax is on the brink of an exciting rebirth. Fueled by grant funding, heritage tourism, and small business investments, the town is crafting a new identity grounded in community, history, and culture.

As the southern anchor of Main Street, the theatre isn’t just centrally located—it’s symbolically vital. Its grand marquee serves as a lighthouse for opportunity. Any investor, preservationist, or dreamer looking to make an impact can find in this building a blank stage upon which to script the next act of Colfax’s story.

Potential Uses for the Colfax Theatre

Owning a historic theatre doesn’t mean just playing reruns of old films (though that would be charming). The Colfax Theatre offers incredible versatility:

Event Venue – Perfect for fundraisers and community gatherings.

Community Arts Center – Host performances, art exhibits, lectures, and workshops.

Live Music Venue – Think acoustic nights, jazz sessions, or indie band showcases.

Independent Cinema – Showcase local filmmakers or hold film festivals.

A Business Opportunity with Heart

Purchasing the Colfax Theatre isn’t just an investment in real estate—it’s a commitment to community. With Colfax’s population growing and its tourism on the rise, this space could become a cornerstone of local economic development.

And the timing couldn’t be better. The Historic Colfax Downtown Association is actively partnering with stakeholders, applying for grants, and driving initiatives to support projects just like this.

Colfax Farmers Market Launch Event with live music and local vendors

Colfax Farmers Market Launch Draws a Joyful Crowd to Historic Main Street

A charming evening of music, food, and community spirit

In the Sierra Nevada foothills City of Colfax, carries a legacy as rich as California’s Gold Rush era. Last Thursday, that history echoed joyfully along Main Street, as the Colfax Farmers Market kicked off its summer season with a launch event that was nothing short of spectacular.

From the moment the market opened, the atmosphere buzzed with energy. The scent of fresh-baked pastries danced in the air. Families strolled leisurely with their children. Neighbors laughed in reunion. And local solo guitarist strummed soul-soothing tunes under golden light. This wasn’t just a market—it was a celebration of community, heritage, and the power of gathering at the Colfax Farmers Market.

Music, Meals, and Market Magic

As the sun dipped behind the historic rooftops of Colfax, the soft strumming of a live acoustic guitarist drifted through the air, adding a layer of warmth that wrapped around the crowd like a familiar melody. His gentle tunes mingled effortlessly with the sounds of laughter, conversation, and the comforting sizzle from the nearby food truck. The music wasn’t just background noise—it was the heartbeat of the evening, inviting visitors to pause, listen, and truly take in the experience of the Colfax Farmers Market.

But the true surprise of the evening? A local artisan baker whose table emptied almost as fast as it was stocked. Her sourdough loaves became the talk of the market, selling out long before twilight at Colfax Farmers Market. What an afternoon deeply rooted in Colfax’s community spirit.

Colfax Farmers Market returns

How the Colfax Farmers Market Helps Our Local Economy Thrive

Here in Colfax, CA, we know that a strong community starts with strong local connections — between our people, our businesses, and the land that sustains us. That’s why the Historic Colfax Downtown Association is so excited to celebrate the return of the Colfax Farmers Market, proudly organized by the dedicated team at the Sierra Vista Community Center.

Starting May 15th, and running every Thursday evening from 4:00 PM to 7:30 PM on Main Street in Downtown Colfax, this seasonal market isn’t just about fresh vegetables and handmade crafts (though you’ll find plenty of those!). It’s about creating meaningful economic opportunities that support local families, small business owners, and the long-term health of our community.

The Power of Buying Local

When you shop at the Colfax Farmers Market, you aren’t just purchasing a basket of tomatoes or a loaf of artisan bread. You’re putting your dollars directly into the hands of local farmers, crafters, bakers, and entrepreneurs who live and work right here in our region. These small-scale producers reinvest those earnings back into our local economy — whether that’s through purchasing supplies from nearby businesses, hiring local help, or spending their income at other shops and restaurants in town.

Research consistently shows that money spent at local markets circulates within the community longer than dollars spent at big-box stores or chain retailers. For every $100 spent locally, up to $68 stays right here in the local economy, compared to only $43 when spent at non-local businesses. This ripple effect means stronger job creation, increased economic resilience, and more opportunities for everyone in our town.

A Platform for Entrepreneurs and Startups

The Colfax Farmers Market also serves as an incubator for new ideas and small businesses. For many local makers and growers, the market provides their first opportunity to test products, build a customer base, and receive direct feedback from shoppers. It’s a low-barrier entry point that allows budding entrepreneurs to start small, grow sustainably, and establish lasting relationships within the community.

Whether it’s a young farmer debuting their first crop, an artisan introducing a new handmade product, or a local chef serving up ready-to-eat meals, the market creates space for innovation and creativity. These ventures might someday expand into storefronts, restaurants, or larger operations — all starting right here on Main Street at the farmers market.

Bringing Traffic and Energy to Downtown

Beyond the direct benefits to vendors, the Colfax Farmers Market draws foot traffic to Downtown Colfax, bringing visitors and residents alike into the heart of our town. This consistent flow of people on Thursday evenings not only supports the farmers and crafters at the market itself but also benefits nearby local shops, restaurants, and service providers.

More visitors downtown means more sales, more conversations, and more opportunities for our small businesses to connect with customers. The vibrant energy the market brings helps make downtown Colfax a destination — not just for shopping, but for community gathering and shared experiences.

A Healthier, More Resilient Colfax

Of course, the economic benefits are only one part of the story. A thriving farmers market contributes to public health by improving access to fresh, nutritious foods. It fosters environmental sustainability by reducing the need for long-distance shipping and packaging. Most importantly, it strengthens the social fabric of our community by creating a welcoming space where neighbors meet, stories are shared, and relationships grow.

All of these pieces work together to create a healthier, more resilient local economy — one that can better withstand challenges and continue to serve the people who call Colfax home.

Thank You to the Sierra Vista Community Center

We at the Historic Colfax Downtown Association would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the Sierra Vista Community Center for their leadership and hard work in organizing the Colfax Farmers Market. Their efforts make this event possible and help ensure its continued success as an economic engine and gathering place for our town.

We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to the City of Colfax and the Colfax City Council for their generous support of the Colfax Farmers Market. This year, the City Council voted to grant $2,500 toward the success of this important community event. Their commitment to supporting local agriculture, small businesses, and downtown vitality plays a vital role in making the farmers market possible. This funding helps ensure that we can continue to provide a welcoming, well-organized, and vibrant space for both vendors and visitors, contributing directly to the economic health and community spirit of Colfax.
