Revitalizing Colfax, CA: A Community Mission to Transform Our Historic Downtown
Downtown Colfax is more than a collection of historic buildings โ itโs the heart of our community. For years, though, like many small towns, it has faced real challenges: vacant storefronts, landmark buildings in need of care, and too few spaces for people to gather.
Yet within those challenges lies opportunity. Colfax sits at a strategic location along Interstate 80, just 30 minutes from Sacramento and en route to Truckee and Lake Tahoe. Every day, thousands of travelers pass through. What if, instead of just fueling up or grabbing coffee, they stopped to explore? What if our downtown โ with its Gold Rush and railroad history โ became a reason to visit, not just a place to pass by?
Thatโs the vision of the Historic Colfax Downtown Association: to transform our historic downtown into a vibrant destination where history, commerce, and community come together.
The Challenges We Face
- Vacant storefronts that leave gaps along Main Street.
- Historic buildings in disrepair, waiting for the investment and care they deserve.
- Limited gathering spaces for families, neighbors, and visitors to connect.
The Opportunities Ahead
- Prime location on the I-80 corridor between Sacramento and Tahoe.
- Visitor traffic โ thousands pass through town daily, representing untapped potential.
- Historic assets โ Colfaxโs Gold Rush and railroad heritage provide a rich foundation for revitalization.
- Underused properties that can be activated for events, businesses, and cultural experiences.
Early Wins
โจ Success Story: The Fruit Exchange Building
In 2025, we reactivated the long-vacant Fruit Exchange Building with the launch of the Colfax Bazaar โ a new recurring marketplace that celebrates local makers, builds community, and brings new visitors to town.
The result? Over 1,000 people filled downtown for the first event. A building that hadnโt seen life in more than a decade became the centerpiece of a brand-new tradition. The Colfax Bazaar has proven whatโs possible when our historic spaces are brought back into service for the community.
Preservation Education
Weโve hosted preservation workshops to help property owners understand how to register their buildings as historic landmarks. These sessions connect owners to resources and incentives that make it easier to restore and protect Colfaxโs heritage.
Community Events
From festivals to markets, our events have drawn new energy downtown, showing that when we create reasons for people to gather, Colfax responds.
What Weโre Working Toward
- Colfax Hotel Restoration โ Reviving one of downtownโs most iconic historic buildings as a cornerstone for Main Streetโs future.
- Historic Walking Tour โ Creating a self-guided experience with markers and QR codes that connect visitors to Colfaxโs past.
- Murals & Beautification โ Partnering with local artists and volunteers to transform walls, alleys, and streetscapes into points of pride.
- Connectivity & Safety Improvements โ Working with the City of Colfax and Placer County to improve sidewalks, lighting, and crosswalks, making downtown more welcoming and walkable.
Why It Matters
Revitalization is not just about restoring buildings โ itโs about breathing new life into them. When a long-quiet space fills with people again, or when families gather on Main Street for an event, it changes the way the whole town sees itself.
The Historic Colfax Downtown Association is here to connect past and future โ preserving the character that defines us while building the kind of downtown that sustains families, attracts visitors, and brings pride to everyone who calls Colfax home.
