Curious about printmaking but not sure where to start? Craftfolk Collective has you covered. This June, multidisciplinary artist Jill McCann is bringing her passion for printmaking to Historic Downtown Colfax for a hands-on beginner workshop that will have you carving, inking, and printing your own designs in a single afternoon.
Whether you’ve always wanted to try block printing, love the idea of making handmade cards and art prints, or are simply looking to add a new creative process to your toolkit — this is the workshop for you.
What You’ll Learn
This beginner-friendly workshop introduces the fundamentals of rubber block printing from the ground up. Jill will walk you through how to transfer a design onto a rubber block, then guide you through the process of carving, inking, and printing using foundational techniques. Along the way you’ll cover safe carving practices, tool handling, and printing methods — with plenty of time to experiment and ask questions at your own pace.
No prior experience is needed and no artistic background is required. Just curiosity and a willingness to get a little inky.
What You’ll Take Home
Your materials fee covers everything you’ll use in class plus a complete take-home kit so you can keep creating long after the workshop ends. You’ll leave with rubber carving blocks, a full set of carving tools, an ink tray, a baren, and paper — everything you need to keep printing at home.
Meet Your Instructor — Jill McCann
Jill McCann is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans painting, fiber arts, printmaking, collage, mixed media, and digital art — a practice shaped by over two decades of experimentation and a deep connection to the Sierra Foothills landscape she calls home. Her creative roots reach back to age fourteen, when she apprenticed at the Kirmeyer School of Fiber Arts, where she developed a lasting appreciation for process, material, and craft.
Alongside her studio practice, Jill has worked for many years in public education, supporting students with disabilities and designing professional development for educators across Placer County and California. She currently teaches in a special education teacher intern program and leads adult art workshops through community education programs. For Jill, time spent with paint on her hands or in creative collaboration with others is always time well spent.
