Colfax Captured: Local Photographer Greyson Sharpe Wins the Historic Colfax Billboard Contest

Greyson Sharpe’s Vision Now Welcomes All to Colfax

There’s something magical about rounding the bend into Colfax and seeing the town’s charm come to life on a larger-than-life digital canvas. That magic? It’s the work of Greyson Sharpe, the talented local photographer recently named the winner of the Historic Colfax Billboard Contest.

Out of a pool of passionate submissions that beautifully showcased the essence of Colfax, Greyson’s image stood out. Selected by the Colfax City Council, his photograph now proudly greets visitors and locals alike on a prominent digital billboard—an iconic first impression of a town full of history, beauty, and heart.

A Contest That Brought Colfax Into Focus

In partnership with the City of Colfax and the Colfax City Council, and organized by the Historic Colfax Downtown Association (HCDA) the billboard contest was much more than a photo competition—it was a community celebration.

Running through the first quarter of 2025, the contest invited both local photographers and visitors to submit their best snapshots of downtown Colfax, focusing on themes like:

  • Historic architecture and storefronts
  • The town’s rich railroad legacy
  • Unique perspectives that capture the spirit of Colfax

Photos were submitted via Facebook and email, then opened to the community for voting. In the end, the top-voted image was reviewed and officially approved by the City Council, sealing Greyson’s win.

Meet Greyson Sharpe: A Lens on Local Life

Greyson Sharpe is no stranger to capturing Colfax through the lens. A lifelong resident and passionate visual storyteller, his work often features the quiet beauty of everyday life in Colfax—sunlight spilling across vintage brick walls, mist weaving through the pines, and the nostalgic rhythm of the railroad.

His winning photo perfectly embodies the goals of the contest: to highlight the beauty, history, and personality of Colfax in one striking image. With the digital billboard now live, his work is making thousands of impressions each week, offering a warm welcome to travelers and a point of pride for residents.

A Community Effort Worth Celebrating

The success of the contest is thanks in large part to the HCDA’s ongoing commitment to promoting Colfax as a place to visit, live, and invest in. With platforms like VisitHistoricColfax.com, the HCDA continues to elevate the local economy by highlighting Colfax’s charm to a broader audience.

From organizing the contest to engaging the community through social media voting, the HCDA helped turn this initiative into a powerful example of community-driven tourism and arts promotion.

And the response? Overwhelmingly positive. Locals shared and voted, families snapped billboard selfies, and visitors learned something new about Colfax just from driving through.

What Comes Next?

Greyson’s billboard is now live and will continue to shine a light on Colfax’s downtown for the coming months. The winning image will also be featured on VisitHistoricColfax.com, helping attract new visitors and businesses to town.

And while this round of the contest has wrapped, the momentum has just begun. The HCDA is already looking ahead to future events that celebrate creativity, history, and community pride. Stay tuned.

🎶 Spotlight on Richard Smith

Few guitarists in the world possess the extraordinary range, technique, and musicality of Richard Smith. Richard began playing guitar at just five years old. By eleven, he had already performed on stage with Chet Atkins, the legendary country guitarist who would later call Richard “the most amazing guy I know on the guitar.”

Smith is the 2001 National Fingerstyle Guitar Champion and a world-touring virtuoso known for blending classical, jazz, country, pop, gypsy, and ragtime styles seamlessly in a single performance. His unique ability to sound like an entire band—playing rhythm, melody, and bass simultaneously—has captivated audiences across the globe.

He has shared the stage with iconic musicians such as:

  • Tommy Emmanuel
  • Les Paul
  • Suzy Bogguss
  • John Jorgenson
  • Martin Taylor

Richard Smith’s live shows are a masterclass in musical brilliance and storytelling, equally touching, funny, and jaw-droppingly impressive.

“He can play anything I know—only better.” – Chet Atkins
“If you like my playing, you should hear Richard Smith.” – Tommy Emmanuel

This performance at the Colfax Theater offers a rare opportunity to see a guitarist of this caliber up close in a beautifully restored venue.

🎭 The Historic Colfax Theatre

Originally built in 1939, the Colfax Theatre is one of the city’s most treasured landmarks. Following a fire that destroyed the previous theater, the current art deco building rose in its place and has been lovingly restored in recent decades. Its classic Streamline Moderne architecture, warm acoustics, and cozy atmosphere make it an ideal venue for music, storytelling, and cultural events.

Bringing world-class performances like this one to the Colfax Theater is a key part of the Historic Colfax Downtown Association’s mission to revitalize Main Street and create a thriving arts and culture scene in our town.

Colfax Art Month: 5 Reasons Not to Miss Art Night at Snapdragon Provisions

Welcome to the creative heart of California’s Sierra Foothills — where historic charm meets artistic passion, and spring brings more than wildflowers. This April, Colfax proudly takes part in the statewide Arts Month initiative led by the Placer County Arts Council and the California Arts Council, celebrating the power of creativity in communities just like ours. As part of this cultural movement, the Historic Colfax Downtown Association is thrilled to support one of the season’s most inspiring events: Art Night at Snapdragon Provisions.

Happening on Friday, April 4th, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at the ever-inviting Snapdragon Provisions, this special evening goes beyond a traditional art show. It’s a cozy, colorful gathering designed to uplift local artists, spark connection, and spotlight Colfax’s growing recognition as a vibrant arts destination.

Whether you’re a passionate creator, an art enthusiast, or simply someone who loves supporting local culture, this is your invitation to experience the joy, depth, and creativity of Colfax Art Month firsthand.

A Local Art Showcase Like No Other

Colfax and the Sierra Foothills are brimming with hidden gems — artists whose work pulses with passion, personality, and purpose. At Art Night, you’ll discover painters, illustrators, mixed-media mavens, and handcrafted makers who bring authenticity to every piece they display.

What makes this different from a typical exhibit? The intimacy. The casual, welcoming historic atmosphere strips away the pretension sometimes found in galleries. Here, you can chat directly with creators, hear the stories behind their work, and maybe even walk away with a new piece that speaks to your soul.

The Interactive Flower Bar: Bloom Your Own Beauty

Here’s a delightful twist: in the middle of all the visual art, you get to make some of your own. Enter the Interactive Flower Bar — a whimsical station provided by Bloomin’ Mountain Flowers, located right inside Snapdragon Provisions. Guests can handpick fresh, seasonal stems and design their own custom floral bundle.

It’s sensory, meditative, and yes, highly Instagrammable. Whether you’re crafting a bouquet for yourself, a friend, or a little Friday-night joy, this flower bar is a blooming good time and a perfect way to add a hands-on creative touch to your Art Night experience.

Crafted Mocktails That Stir the Soul

Don’t underestimate the power of a thoughtfully crafted drink. While Art Night is alcohol-free, it certainly doesn’t lack flair. Expect a menu of crafted mocktails — artfully mixed to match the mood, colors, and themes of the night.

These aren’t your basic lemonades. Think botanical infusions, refreshing herbs, and sparkling surprises that elevate your sip into a whole experience. It’s yet another layer of creativity woven into the evening.

Sweet Bites for a Sweet Night

Let’s be real — no art event is complete without dessert. At Art Night, expect beautifully plated sweets that are as visually stunning as they are delicious. Each dessert is crafted to be a tiny work of edible art — perfect for pairing with your mocktail and lingering conversation.

Whether you’re a dessert connoisseur or just there for the vibes, these sweet bites will leave you smiling.

A Community-Centered Celebration of Colfax Art Month

Perhaps the most beautiful aspect of Art Night is its purpose. This isn’t just an event; it’s a movement to connect local creatives, celebrate the culture of the Sierra Foothills, and bring neighbors together through shared inspiration.

Born from the heart of Bloomin’ Mountain Flowers and Snapdragon Provisions, the event is meant to spark relationships and encourage collaboration. It’s grassroots in the best way — organic, genuine, and growing stronger with each new gathering.

Whether you’re an artist, an art lover, or someone who’s just art-curious, you’re invited.

Colfax Art Month

Art Night at Snapdragon Provisions beautifully encapsulates the spirit of Colfax Art Month — a vibrant, community-centered celebration that highlights the creativity blooming throughout our foothill town. As the Historic Colfax Downtown Association, we are proud to support this event and contribute to the growing recognition of Colfax as a hub for the arts. This evening is part of a broader effort, aligned with both the Placer County Arts Council and the California Arts Council’s statewide Arts Month initiative — a movement dedicated to uplifting the arts in every corner of California. From our converted cafés to our scenic streets and heartfelt gatherings, Colfax is proving that great art doesn’t just live in museums — it lives in our people, our places, and our shared passion for creativity.

Colfax Arts Month: Advocating for the Arts & Bringing Creativity to Our Historic Downtown

Colfax, CA: A City Where Arts, Culture & Creativity Thrive

The Historic Colfax Downtown Association (HCDA) is thrilled to announce our efforts to establish April as Arts, Culture & Creativity Month in Colfax, CA! As part of a larger Placer County and statewide initiative, we are working hard to bring more art, music, and cultural events to our historic downtown.

The arts have the power to revitalize communities—boosting tourism, supporting local businesses, and strengthening our town’s identity and pride. We are advocating at a city level to gain official recognition and support for Arts Month in Colfax. This is a community effort, and we invite everyone to join us in celebrating and promoting the arts in our town!

Why Colfax Needs to Recognize Arts Month

The Economic & Cultural Impact of the Arts

The arts aren’t just about creativity—they are a driving force for economic growth and tourism. Research from the Arts & Economic Prosperity report by Americans for the Arts shows that:

The average arts attendee spends $31.47 per event, supporting local businesses like restaurants, retail shops, and hotels.
One-third (34%) of arts attendees travel from outside the county, spending more than twice as much as local attendees.
14.3% of nonlocal arts visitors stay overnight, spending an average of $142.70 per person on lodging.

These statistics highlight the economic potential of investing in the arts. By officially recognizing Arts, Culture & Creativity Month, Colfax can position itself as a regional destination for arts tourism, benefiting both local artists and businesses.

Who are Americans for the Arts and Why is Their Report Important?

Americans for the Arts is a leading national nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the arts and arts education across the United States. Their Arts & Economic Prosperity report is one of the most comprehensive studies measuring the economic impact of the nonprofit arts and culture sector.

This report is essential because it provides data-driven insights into how arts and cultural organizations contribute to local economies by generating jobs, increasing tourism, and driving business revenue. Read the Arts & Economic Prosperity report.

Bringing Arts to Colfax, CA: Building Community Through Creativity

By Erin Newington, President of the Historic Colfax Downtown Association

On December 6, 2024, I had the privilege of attending the “Collaborate and Activate to Increase Support for the Arts” workshop in Auburn, CA.
