Walk into Colfax Farm & Country Store for dog food and you’ll walk out with a lot more on your list. Carol and Ron Dotto opened the store on Main Street in 2007, and it’s grown into the kind of place a small town depends on without quite noticing — until the day you need chicken feed, a bag of wood pellets, and a fishing bobber, and it turns out one stop covers all three.

The shelves run deep. Dog and cat food, wild bird seed, rabbit and guinea pig supplies, hay and horse feed for the farm animals down the road, wood fuel and shavings for the woodstove season, garden supplies for whoever’s finally starting that raised bed. There’s a U-Haul lot out front too, in case Main Street is also where your move starts or ends.

And now, bait and tackle. If Rollins Lake or the Bear River is on the plan for the weekend, Colfax Farm & Country Store is the last stop before the water — not a highway bait shop, a Main Street one, right on the way.

There’s a gift section too, for anyone who wants to leave Colfax with more than a memory. Stop in on the way through — worth a look even if fishing wasn’t the plan.

That’s the twenty-minutes-off-I-80 math working in Colfax’s favor: gas up, grab bait, pick out a gift, and be casting a line within the hour. For the boat trailer crowd headed to Rollins, or anyone chasing trout on the Bear River, it’s one less stop between the highway and the water — and a reason to bring something home besides fish.

Open seven days a week, with staff who know the difference between what a guinea pig needs and what a goat does — Colfax Farm & Country Store has been quietly doing a lot of jobs at once since 2007. Still standing, still stocked, still on Main Street.
