Gordan’s Gym: A New Chapter for Fitness and Community in Colfax, CA

Big news for health-conscious locals and community advocates alike—Colfax, CA is about to welcome a brand-new fitness facility right on the edge of its historic downtown. Gordan’s Gym, a proposed 6,890 sq. ft. purpose-built gym, is set to rise at the northwest corner of S. Auburn Street and E. Oak Street, bringing modern amenities, local investment, and daily foot traffic to this important gateway corridor.

Local Owner, Local Vision

The new facility is spearheaded by Gordan Allen, owner of the existing gym at 130 Whitcomb Avenue. With a growing member base and a desire to better serve Colfax residents, Gordan has purchased the vacant lot at 159 S. Auburn Street. His vision? A gym that’s tailored to the needs of the community, built from the ground up to offer space, comfort, and services that go beyond basic fitness.

This expansion reflects a major local commitment—an entrepreneur reinvesting in his own community, creating something lasting and deeply tied to Colfax’s future.

What’s Planned for Gordan’s Gym?

The proposed one-story facility has been carefully designed to fit Colfax’s small-town charm while meeting the demands of a modern fitness community. Here’s what you can expect:

  • A spacious open gym floor with top-tier equipment
  • Dedicated classrooms for yoga, spin, or group workouts
  • Reception area and flexible office space
  • Separate men’s and women’s restrooms
  • Bike and pedestrian circulation to promote walkability

The City of Colfax approved Design Review (DR 24-02) and a Minor Variance (VAR 24-01) on September 24, 2025, clearing the way for construction—provided certain community-minded conditions are met.

Design That Reflects Historic Colfax

The gym won’t just serve residents—it’s designed to be visually harmonious with the historic district just steps away. The building will feature:

  • Standing-seam metal roofing that reflects Sierra foothill architecture
  • Horizontal lap siding for a timeless, classic exterior
  • Storefront-style windows along E. Oak and S. Auburn, creating an inviting street presence
  • No windows on the north side, which faces nearby homes, to maintain privacy
  • A retaining wall on the residential side, enhancing visual and acoustic buffering

This mix of modern usability and historic compatibility ensures the building enhances the streetscape without disrupting Colfax’s unique vibe.

Landscaping and Environmental Responsibility

Environmental and aesthetic concerns were thoughtfully addressed in the project’s approval. While five mature trees will be removed, the development will include:

  • Five new 15-gallon trees
  • Native shrubs and groundcover
  • A maintained irrigation system for sustainability

In addition, the gym will feature on-site drainage infrastructure, helping manage runoff and prevent erosion—especially important during winter storms or heavy rains in the foothills.

Dark-Sky Lighting & Quiet Neighborhoods

To protect Colfax’s beautiful night skies and maintain a peaceful environment for nearby homes, all exterior lighting will be dark-sky compliant. This means:

  • Fixtures will be shielded and directed downward
  • Light pollution will be minimized
  • Nearby properties will not be negatively impacted by glare or brightness

The building will also use non-reflective roofing materials, reducing daytime glare and enhancing visual comfort for pedestrians and neighbors alike.

Community Benefits Beyond Fitness

Gordan’s Gym isn’t just about treadmills and dumbbells. It’s a community asset that aligns with Colfax’s broader goals for revitalization, health, and walkability.

Here’s what it brings to the table:

  • Daily foot traffic that supports surrounding shops, restaurants, and services
  • Inclusive programming for all ages, from youth classes to senior-friendly sessions
  • A high-quality, visually appealing building on a key gateway into the downtown district
  • Alignment with the City’s Downtown Connectivity & Main Street Improvement Plan

The gym will help activate the southern approach to downtown Colfax, drawing locals and visitors into the heart of the historic district.

Construction Conditions and Timeline

The City’s approval includes several conditions to protect local residents during construction, including:

  • Work hours limited by noise ordinances and clearly posted
  • Dust and erosion controls from day one
  • Screened utilities and trash areas for a tidy job site
  • Lighting and roofing standards maintained throughout the build

The project has 24 months of active approval—through September 24, 2027—to finalize plans, pull permits, and break ground.

A Healthier, More Vibrant Colfax

Gordan’s Gym is more than a business expansion—it’s a symbol of Colfax’s forward momentum. It brings together health, design, economy, and community under one roof, while respecting the town’s values and visual identity.

With its thoughtful planning, strategic location, and commitment to quality, this project is poised to become a cornerstone of downtown Colfax’s next chapter.
