Downtown Revitalization

What Doors Open California 2026 Means for Colfax CA — And Why This Moment Matters

Historic Colfax has officially been selected as a participating site for Doors Open California 2026, a prestigious program organized by the California Preservation Foundation that highlights historically and architecturally significant places across the state. For a small Sierra Foothill town like Colfax CA, this is more than an event announcement — it’s validation.

And for us at the Historic Colfax Downtown Association (HCDA), it’s a powerful step forward in achieving our mission.

Our Mission Has Always Been About More Than Buildings

At HCDA, we talk a lot about revitalization. But revitalization doesn’t just mean fresh paint or new signage. It means breathing life back into the heart of downtown Colfax CA in a way that honors the past while building the future.

Our mission is simple but deeply rooted:
To breathe new life into downtown Colfax by honoring its history, uplifting its people, and creating spaces where community can truly take root.

Doors Open California aligns perfectly with that vision.

Because meaningful revitalization doesn’t happen when we erase history — it happens when we preserve it, tell it well, and invite others to experience it.

Colfax was built on grit. Gold Rush determination. Railroad ingenuity. Families who believed this hillside town was worth investing in. That legacy still lives here. It’s in the Colfax Passenger Depot. It’s in the historic Main Street storefronts. It’s in the way longtime residents tell stories about Cape Horn and the Transcontinental Railroad as if it happened yesterday.

Now, the rest of California is being invited to see what we’ve always known.

Downtown Colfax CA

Colfax CA Is More Than a Freeway Exit

Let’s be honest. For decades, many people have known Colfax CA as “that exit on I-80.” A quick gas stop. A coffee break. A blink-and-you-miss-it town between Sacramento and Reno.

But that perception has never matched reality.

Colfax played a critical role in the Transcontinental Railroad — one of the most significant infrastructure achievements in American history. It was a Gold Rush-era hub that supported mining, commerce, and westward expansion. The engineering marvel of Cape Horn alone is enough to put Colfax on the historical map.

Doors Open California helps shift the narrative.

Instead of being a town people pass through, Colfax CA becomes a town people plan to visit.

And that shift matters.

When visitors come intentionally — to explore, to learn, to experience — they spend time downtown. They walk into local businesses. They eat at our restaurants. They talk to shop owners. They take photos and share them. They come back with friends.

That’s how momentum builds.

Recognition Fuels Revitalization

Being selected for Doors Open California 2026 does something powerful: it places Colfax CA on the statewide cultural map.

That visibility strengthens our long-term revitalization efforts in several ways.

First, it attracts heritage travelers — a growing group of visitors who actively seek out authentic historic towns. These are people who value preserved architecture, local storytelling, and community character. Colfax offers all of that naturally.

Second, recognition supports future grant applications and preservation funding opportunities. When statewide organizations acknowledge the historical significance of Colfax, it reinforces the legitimacy of our ongoing economic development and preservation projects.

Third, it builds credibility. Investors, business owners, and community partners see that Colfax is not just dreaming big — it’s being recognized at the state level.

For a small town in Placer County, that kind of recognition carries weight.

Honoring the Past While Building a Stronger Future

Colfax CA has always been resilient. It was built during one of the most intense and unpredictable eras in California history. It survived economic shifts, railroad transitions, and changing travel patterns.

Today, we’re in another transition — one where small towns must intentionally define their identity to thrive.

We believe our identity is clear.

Colfax is a town rooted in history, powered by community, and positioned for thoughtful growth.

Participation in Doors Open California 2026 allows us to showcase:

  • Our Gold Rush-era architecture
  • Our railroad legacy
  • Our preserved Main Street district
  • Our historic civic landmarks
  • The engineering achievement of Cape Horn

But beyond the sites themselves, it showcases something even more important: our commitment to preservation as an economic and cultural strategy.

We are not trying to become something we’re not.
We are leaning into what makes Colfax CA distinctly Colfax.

What This Means for Downtown Businesses

When statewide attention turns toward Colfax CA, downtown benefits.

Visitors exploring historic sites will also explore shops, restaurants, galleries, and service businesses. Increased foot traffic creates opportunity. Increased visibility builds brand awareness for local entrepreneurs.

Events like Doors Open California don’t just create a weekend boost — they create ripple effects. People who discover Colfax in 2026 may return for festivals, seasonal events, or weekend getaways. Some may even choose to invest or relocate.

A thriving downtown ecosystem depends on consistent storytelling, strategic promotion, and community engagement. This selection supports all three.

An Invitation to Rediscover Colfax CA

If you haven’t walked Main Street lately, now is the time.

If you’ve lived here for years but never toured the historic depot, this is your moment.

If you’ve only seen Colfax CA from the freeway, we invite you to take the exit and stay awhile.

Because this town — our town — is stepping into a new chapter. One that honors its past while building an economically vibrant and connected future.

Doors Open California 2026 is not the finish line.

It’s a doorway.

And Colfax CA is ready to open it.

Gordan’s Gym: A New Chapter for Fitness and Community in Colfax, CA

Big news for health-conscious locals and community advocates alike—Colfax, CA is about to welcome a brand-new fitness facility right on the edge of its historic downtown. Gordan’s Gym, a proposed 6,890 sq. ft. purpose-built gym, is set to rise at the northwest corner of S. Auburn Street and E. Oak Street, bringing modern amenities, local investment, and daily foot traffic to this important gateway corridor.

Local Owner, Local Vision

The new facility is spearheaded by Gordan Allen, owner of the existing gym at 130 Whitcomb Avenue. With a growing member base and a desire to better serve Colfax residents, Gordan has purchased the vacant lot at 159 S. Auburn Street. His vision? A gym that’s tailored to the needs of the community, built from the ground up to offer space, comfort, and services that go beyond basic fitness.

This expansion reflects a major local commitment—an entrepreneur reinvesting in his own community, creating something lasting and deeply tied to Colfax’s future.

What’s Planned for Gordan’s Gym?

The proposed one-story facility has been carefully designed to fit Colfax’s small-town charm while meeting the demands of a modern fitness community. Here’s what you can expect:

  • A spacious open gym floor with top-tier equipment
  • Dedicated classrooms for yoga, spin, or group workouts
  • Reception area and flexible office space
  • Separate men’s and women’s restrooms
  • Bike and pedestrian circulation to promote walkability

The City of Colfax approved Design Review (DR 24-02) and a Minor Variance (VAR 24-01) on September 24, 2025, clearing the way for construction—provided certain community-minded conditions are met.

Design That Reflects Historic Colfax

The gym won’t just serve residents—it’s designed to be visually harmonious with the historic district just steps away. The building will feature:

  • Standing-seam metal roofing that reflects Sierra foothill architecture
  • Horizontal lap siding for a timeless, classic exterior
  • Storefront-style windows along E. Oak and S. Auburn, creating an inviting street presence
  • No windows on the north side, which faces nearby homes, to maintain privacy
  • A retaining wall on the residential side, enhancing visual and acoustic buffering

This mix of modern usability and historic compatibility ensures the building enhances the streetscape without disrupting Colfax’s unique vibe.

Landscaping and Environmental Responsibility

Environmental and aesthetic concerns were thoughtfully addressed in the project’s approval. While five mature trees will be removed, the development will include:

  • Five new 15-gallon trees
  • Native shrubs and groundcover
  • A maintained irrigation system for sustainability

In addition, the gym will feature on-site drainage infrastructure, helping manage runoff and prevent erosion—especially important during winter storms or heavy rains in the foothills.

Dark-Sky Lighting & Quiet Neighborhoods

To protect Colfax’s beautiful night skies and maintain a peaceful environment for nearby homes, all exterior lighting will be dark-sky compliant. This means:

  • Fixtures will be shielded and directed downward
  • Light pollution will be minimized
  • Nearby properties will not be negatively impacted by glare or brightness

The building will also use non-reflective roofing materials, reducing daytime glare and enhancing visual comfort for pedestrians and neighbors alike.

Community Benefits Beyond Fitness

Gordan’s Gym isn’t just about treadmills and dumbbells. It’s a community asset that aligns with Colfax’s broader goals for revitalization, health, and walkability.

Here’s what it brings to the table:

  • Daily foot traffic that supports surrounding shops, restaurants, and services
  • Inclusive programming for all ages, from youth classes to senior-friendly sessions
  • A high-quality, visually appealing building on a key gateway into the downtown district
  • Alignment with the City’s Downtown Connectivity & Main Street Improvement Plan

The gym will help activate the southern approach to downtown Colfax, drawing locals and visitors into the heart of the historic district.

Construction Conditions and Timeline

The City’s approval includes several conditions to protect local residents during construction, including:

  • Work hours limited by noise ordinances and clearly posted
  • Dust and erosion controls from day one
  • Screened utilities and trash areas for a tidy job site
  • Lighting and roofing standards maintained throughout the build

The project has 24 months of active approval—through September 24, 2027—to finalize plans, pull permits, and break ground.

A Healthier, More Vibrant Colfax

Gordan’s Gym is more than a business expansion—it’s a symbol of Colfax’s forward momentum. It brings together health, design, economy, and community under one roof, while respecting the town’s values and visual identity.

With its thoughtful planning, strategic location, and commitment to quality, this project is poised to become a cornerstone of downtown Colfax’s next chapter.

Colfax at the Table: Representing Our Town at Placer Valley 2025

A Seat at the Regional Table

Colfax may be small, but its voice carries weight — especially when it shows up at the right tables. At Placer Valley 2025: The Next Normal – Strategies for a Shifting Business Landscape, our town had the chance to take a literal and figurative seat alongside Placer County’s biggest players. This wasn’t just another conference or government meet-up. It was a pivotal moment where city leaders, economic strategists, and civic influencers gathered to sketch out the future of the region — and Colfax was right there with them, advocating for the Colfax Downtown Revitalization.

Why is this significant? Because in today’s rapidly evolving business environment, towns like Colfax must find their footing not just within their own borders but in the broader ecosystem. With major cities like Roseville and Rocklin sharing polished strategies and tech-forward plans, it’s more important than ever that communities like ours are seen, heard, and represented.

Our presence at the event wasn’t just ceremonial. The Historic Colfax Downtown Association showed up to connect, advocate, and scout ideas that could take root in our own backyard. We listened to how cities are tackling urban sprawl, balancing heritage with progress, and reimagining how people live, work, and play. These insights are not only valuable — they’re potentially transformative.

Why This Matters for Colfax

While it’s easy to dismiss big-city solutions as out of reach for a place like Colfax, the reality is far more promising. Our town has something no major metropolis can replicate: authenticity, history, charm, and a tight-knit community spirit that’s ripe for thoughtful growth. What we lack in population, we more than make up for in potential — and potential needs partnerships.

Events like Placer Valley 2025 help bridge the gap between ideas and implementation. They offer a platform for shared knowledge, funding opportunities, and policy alignment that small towns can’t afford to miss. For Colfax, it means we’re not only part of the conversation — we’re helping shape it. And that’s a powerful position to be in.

Understanding the Importance of Placer Valley 2025

What is Placer Valley 2025?

At first glance, Placer Valley 2025 might sound like another buzzword-filled event in a sea of local government meetups. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll find something far more impactful — a strategic summit pulling together the sharpest minds from across Placer County to prepare for the “next normal” in business and civic development.

Hosted by Placer County, this event isn’t just about policy or projections. It’s a collaborative brainstorm where city managers, elected officials, economic developers, and civic organizations join forces. The aim? To anticipate trends, respond to shifts in the economic landscape, and chart a more resilient, community-centered path forward.

For Colfax, attending meant having a rare opportunity to engage in cross-city dialogue — to listen, learn, and share. It’s easy to feel isolated as a smaller town, but gatherings like this reinforce that every municipality plays a role in the region’s success. The decisions made here ripple outward, influencing funding priorities, infrastructure upgrades, workforce programs, and zoning updates that directly impact our residents and businesses.

Placer Valley 2025 isn’t a one-off event. It’s part of a larger vision that stretches into the future — aligning regional goals, encouraging innovation, and building coalitions. Whether it’s reshaping how downtown areas function or navigating post-pandemic shifts in retail and workforce trends, the themes discussed are highly relevant to Colfax.

The Theme – “The Next Normal”

Perhaps the most compelling part of the event was its focus on “The Next Normal.” Let’s face it — normal has changed. Post-pandemic realities, evolving work patterns, digital transformation, and shifting demographics have altered what communities need to thrive.

“The Next Normal” isn’t about going back to how things were. It’s about building something better, more adaptable, and more inclusive. The speakers and breakout sessions dove into practical strategies: from adaptive reuse of buildings to promoting local entrepreneurship and increasing downtown vibrancy.

For Colfax, this theme resonated deeply. As a historic town with roots that run deep, we understand the tension between honoring the past and embracing the future. The Next Normal offers a way to do both — preserving what makes Colfax special while adopting modern approaches to economic development.

Colfax’s Role in a Countywide Conversation

Representing Small-Town Voices

In a room full of heavy-hitters from Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, and Auburn, the Historic Colfax Downtown Association stepped in with a singular mission: to make sure Colfax had a voice.

Larger cities naturally dominate these discussions, thanks to bigger budgets, staff, and infrastructure. But small towns like Colfax face their own set of unique challenges — and often don’t have the same access to resources or platforms. Showing up ensures we don’t just get a seat at the table but a say in the outcome.

Advocating for Colfax’s Unique Identity

Colfax isn’t trying to be Rocklin or Auburn. Our goal is to amplify what makes us distinct — from our railroad heritage to our Gold Rush-era architecture. Events like Placer Valley 2025 allow us to position our identity not as a limitation but as a strength.

We’re not interested in cookie-cutter development. We’re interested in community-centered progress — where each improvement supports local culture, enhances quality of life, and reflects the values of our residents. That’s why the Historic Colfax Downtown Association focused on learning about programs and funding streams that support revitalization without erasing the past.

Having a strong brand and sense of place is increasingly seen as a competitive advantage. Colfax already has that in spades. Now, it’s about leveraging it — and regional collaboration is key.

Insights Gained from Larger Cities

Auburn: Energizing Downtown Through Entertainment Zones

Auburn introduced weekend “Entertainment Zones” where residents can enjoy drinks while strolling through downtown — creating a casual, vibrant atmosphere that activates public space without the need for large events. It’s a low-cost, high-impact model that encourages foot traffic and supports local businesses. For Colfax, adopting a similar approach during events or seasonal weekends could foster more community engagement and downtown vitality.

Lincoln: Revitalizing with Form-Based Codes

Lincoln is embracing form-based zoning to prioritize design and mixed-use development over rigid land-use rules. This allows for housing above shops and pedestrian-friendly spaces — breathing life into their historic downtown. Colfax, with its charming buildings and walkable layout, could benefit from similar flexibility, making it easier to repurpose underused spaces while preserving character.

Rocklin: Investing in People to Power Progress

Rocklin’s strategy centers on workforce development and leadership training within city staff and local schools. Their focus on people — not just policy — builds long-term resilience and innovation. Colfax can adopt this mindset by strengthening local leadership, supporting volunteers, and fostering collaboration among civic groups.

Roseville: Blending Retail with Community Experiences

Roseville is turning traditional shopping centers into community hubs — combining retail with events, art, food trucks, and co-working spaces. For Colfax, this is a cue to think beyond storefronts. With strategic programming and creative use of space, our downtown can become a destination where people come not just to shop, but to connect.

Building Sustainable Downtown Programs

A thriving downtown isn’t built overnight — it grows through consistent, meaningful programs that bring people together again and again. For the Historic Colfax Downtown Association (HCDA), building sustainable downtown initiatives means creating experiences that spark pride, connection, and long-term momentum for our community.

This year, the Historic Colfax Downtown Association took a bold step onto the national stage when we advanced to the Top 100 in the Levitt Grant Music Series competition — a prestigious program that funds free outdoor concerts in communities across America. To help rally support during the public voting round, we launched a free concert in just a matter of weeks – called The Rock The Vote Concert, bringing the community together around live music, local pride, and shared energy.

The response was overwhelming. Residents, local businesses, and supporters came out in full force — not just to attend the concert, but to cast their votes and spread the word. That outpouring of support pushed Colfax into the Top 50 Finalists, standing shoulder to shoulder with cities 100 times our size. It was a proud moment that proved our small town has big heart — and a hunger for music, connection, and cultural celebration.

We’re now awaiting the final selection announcement from Levitt, but regardless of the outcome, the experience has already sparked something powerful in Colfax.

That wave of enthusiasm inspired us to take action. Out of that spirit came Pints & Grooves, a free live concert event that celebrated local musicians and downtown Colfax alike. The turnout and positive energy far exceeded expectations, reaffirming the belief that music has the power to unite people and revitalize place.

Building on that success, HCDA is now proud to announce the launch of a 2026 Free Concert Series — a seasonal lineup of outdoor performances designed to bring consistent, high-quality entertainment to our community. These concerts will not only support local and regional artists but also drive traffic to downtown shops, restaurants, and gathering spaces. We hope that the LEvitt Foundation will invest in Colfax and help us fund this concert series, but we are moving forward regardless. One thing about Colfax is we have grit, and we proved that we can make this happen for our town regardless of the outcome of the grant decision.

Alongside our growing Colfax Bazaar, which drew over 1,000 visitors and reactivated the historic Fruit Exchange Building after years of dormancy, this new concert series marks another milestone in Colfax’s journey toward a vibrant, experience-driven downtown.

Sustainability means creating programs that people look forward to — events that strengthen community bonds and generate lasting impact. Through music, collaboration, and creativity, HCDA is proving that small towns can make big noise — and that Colfax’s best days are still ahead.

Staying True to Our Historic Roots While Innovating

Innovation in Colfax doesn’t mean replacing the past — it means amplifying it. Our rich history is one of our town’s greatest strengths, and we’re finding new ways to celebrate it while adapting to meet the future.

From the iconic train depot to preserved Gold Rush-era buildings, Colfax tells a story that can’t be replicated. But these treasures aren’t just relics — they’re foundations for the next chapter. Historic spaces should be lived in, not left behind. That means reimagining old buildings for modern uses — whether it’s turning a former general store into a co-working hub, hosting contemporary art shows in historic hotels, or blending digital tools into walking tours for an interactive, immersive experience.

At the center of this evolution is our digital marketing push — particularly through the Visit Historic Colfax platform. This growing online presence is more than just a website — it’s our virtual front door. Designed to market local events, showcase our downtown businesses, and promote Colfax as a vibrant destination, Visit Historic Colfax helps connect us with visitors, potential investors, and partners looking for authentic small-town experiences.

It’s a powerful reminder that technology and tradition don’t have to be at odds. With tools like digital event calendars, social media campaigns, and SEO-targeted storytelling, we’re making it easier for people to discover what makes Colfax special — and giving them reasons to visit, stay, and return.

Supporting this innovation means making room for smart growth: improving internet infrastructure, welcoming remote workers, enabling live/work zoning, and encouraging flexible use of historic properties. These changes respect the past while creating pathways for the next generation of Colfax entrepreneurs and creatives.

Equally important is community voice. True innovation only succeeds when it reflects local values. That’s why HCDA is committed to inclusive planning, open communication, and empowering residents to be part of the town’s evolving story — through public art, historic preservation, and collaborative visioning.

Colfax doesn’t need to choose between being a historic gem or a forward-thinking town. We’re both — and that’s exactly what makes us worth visiting, investing in, and calling home.

As we look ahead to a brighter, more connected downtown Colfax, we invite you to be part of the movement. Sign up for our newsletter to stay in the loop on events and updates, fill out our community interest form to volunteer your time or skills, or consider donating to support our 2026 free concert series. Whether you’re a business, organization, or neighbor, you can also join us as a community partner. Together, we’re building something special — and we’d love for you to be part of it.

Congressman Kevin Kiley walking Main Street in historic Colfax, California

Congressman Kevin Kiley Visits Colfax’s Historic Main Street

Small towns across America are experiencing a renewed focus on revitalization, and Colfax, California, is no exception. This past week, the Historic Colfax Downtown Association, working alongside the Colfax Chamber of Commerce and Mayor Sean Lomen, welcomed Congressman Kevin Kiley for a walking tour of Colfax’s historic Main Street. Congressman Kevin Kiley’s visit was more than a routine stop—it was a recognition of the ongoing efforts to preserve the town’s unique heritage while breathing new life into its economy.

Too often, small towns are overshadowed by larger cities when it comes to federal attention, resources, and recognition. Kiley’s presence signaled that Colfax, with its deep Gold Rush history and railroad roots, is being seen, valued, and supported. The Congressman didn’t just meet with officials; he walked the streets, talked to business owners, and listened to the challenges and successes of those investing in the heart of the community.

This kind of visit brings more than symbolism—it has the potential to unlock resources and foster partnerships that can accelerate Colfax’s growth. For a town like Colfax, where preservation and progress must work hand-in-hand, the timing couldn’t be more important.

Spotlight on the Colfax Hotel Project

The tour began at the long-vacant Colfax Hotel, a cornerstone of Main Street that has been empty for over 40 years. Owners Leif and Wendy Lowery, already known for restoring the Dutch Flat Hotel and running Miners Camp in Foresthill, are now breathing new life into this long-awaited project.

Working with Mayor Sean Lomen, City Council, and the City of Colfax, the Lowreys expect permits soon and aim to complete renovations within a year. Their plans include hotel rooms, short-term rentals, and a ground-floor restaurant. They’ve gone the extra mile to preserve authenticity—even retrieving original hotel doors they discovered through a Facebook Marketplace listing.

The Historic Colfax Downtown Association is backing the project, with our board member Gretchen Hilyard Boyce of Groundwork Preservation attended the walk-through and provided information on federal tax credits and preservation grants.

Main Street Businesses in the Spotlight

As part of the tour, Congressman Kiley visited several Main Street businesses that showcase Colfax’s entrepreneurial spirit:

  • Colfax Farm & Country Store – A community fixture for nearly 20 years.
  • Snapdragon Provisions – A fresh, organic, and vegan-friendly restaurant opened by Kallie and her wife Taylor after falling in love with Colfax.
  • The Wrecking Crew Café – Run by longtime resident Caroline, who has lived in Colfax for over 30 years.
  • Colfax Market – Operated by Paul, who also owns two Main Street buildings.
  • Coco’s Candy & Creamery – A new arrival to Colfax with an already successful location in Grass Valley.

Each business reflects resilience and creativity, reinforcing Main Street as the heart of the Colfax Downtown community.

The Role of Music and Culture in Revitalization

Revitalization isn’t just about buildings—it’s about creating spaces where people come together. That’s why the Levitt AMP Music Series Grant is such an exciting opportunity for Colfax, CA.

The Historic Colfax Downtown Association applied for this national grant, and Colfax has already beaten out hundreds of cities to make the Top 100 finalists. If selected, it will bring 7–10 free outdoor concerts a year for the next three years, supported by up to $120,000 in matching funds.

What makes this even more powerful is that it would allow us to activate Depot Park—an underutilized space directly in front of the historic Colfax Hotel. With professional staging, lighting, and touring bands alongside local talent, Colfax could host world-class concerts in the heart of downtown.

We shared with Congressman Kiley about making it to the final public voting (Sept. 5–15), and to build excitement, we’re hosting a Rock The Vote Kickoff Concert on Sept. 6 at the Art Park on South Main Street.

Congressman Kevin Kiley has pledged his support to rally behind Colfax in this effort, recognizing that music and culture are key to both economic renewal and community pride. With his backing—and strong community engagement—Colfax has a real chance to turn its historic downtown into a vibrant hub of music and culture. What an opportunity the Levitt Grant Foundation has provided Colfax!

Looking Ahead for Colfax

Congressman Kiley’s visit made it clear that Colfax’s story is worth telling—and worth investing in. From the long-awaited revival of the Colfax Hotel to the growth of Main Street businesses and the exciting opportunity presented by the Levitt AMP Music Series Grant, Colfax is proving that small towns can think big.

The future is about more than preserving historic buildings—it’s about creating a vibrant downtown where history, culture, and community all come together. Projects like the hotel restoration, concerts at Depot Park, and the ongoing efforts of our local entrepreneurs are setting the stage for Colfax to once again be a destination people are proud to call home and eager to visit.

With federal allies like Congressman Kiley, strong local leadership, and the dedication of business owners and residents, Colfax is writing a new chapter—one filled with music, culture, and opportunity.

Now, we invite everyone to be part of this journey. Join us at the Rock the Vote Kickoff Concert on September 6, cast your vote in support of the Levitt AMP Grant from September 5–15, and help us bring world-class music and community pride to the heart of Colfax. Together, we can keep downtown thriving for generations to come.

Historic Colfax Aims for Up to $120K in Levitt Grant to Bring Free Concerts Downtown

After months of tireless work, strategic planning, and fierce competition against hundreds of cities nationwide, the Historic Colfax Downtown Association is proud to announce that Colfax CA Downtown Revitalization has advanced to the public voting round for the prestigious Levitt AMP Music Series Grant.

This isn’t just another grant opportunity—this is a historic moment for our town. Only 100 cities in the entire country made it this far. Last year, just 33 communities received this funding, making our advancement an extraordinary achievement.

If we win, Colfax could receive up to $40,000 per year for three years in matching funds from the Levitt Foundation. That means as much as $120,000 in total funding to host up to ten free concerts annually—bringing world-class live music, new visitors, and fresh energy to our historic downtown.

The impact goes beyond music. This grant represents an opportunity to reignite our local economy, boost tourism, and create lasting cultural experiences that will bring our community closer together.

How Colfax CA is revitalizing its downtown with live music

Imagine warm summer evenings where families, neighbors, and visitors gather under the stars to enjoy top-tier live music—for free. Picture our streets alive with local food vendors, artisans, and businesses buzzing with customers drawn by the events. That’s what this grant could deliver.

Over the three-year funding period, these concerts would:

  • Drive Economic Growth: Increased foot traffic means more business for local restaurants, shops, and lodging.
  • Boost Tourism: Colfax could attract visitors from across Placer County and beyond.
  • Enhance Community Pride: Public spaces would become vibrant gathering places that bring our diverse community together.
  • Preserve and Showcase Local Culture: Each event would highlight Colfax’s rich history while building new traditions for future generations.

The Road to the Final Round

Getting to this stage wasn’t easy. To pass the first round, our team had to:

  • Create a comprehensive event budget that detailed every dollar’s purpose.
  • Design an official event logo as if the concerts were already happening.
  • Develop a full-scale marketing plan to promote the events and maximize attendance.
  • Collect numerous letters of support from community members, nonprofits, and local leaders to prove that Colfax truly wants—and deserves—this opportunity.

This effort took nearly 100 hours of dedicated work and meticulous strategy, positioning Colfax as a competitive contender among much larger cities.

A Call to Action: Community Support Needed

Now comes the most important step—public voting.
The voting period runs from September 5–15, 2025, and the Levitt Foundation has already sent us $1,500 to promote community engagement during these ten days. But that’s just the beginning—winning depends entirely on how many votes we can rally.

We’re calling this an “all-hands-on-deck moment” for Colfax.

Some doubters—outside our community—once told us we had no chance. But here we are, proving them wrong. Now we just have to cross the finish line together.

How We’re Mobilizing Colfax

We plan to host a community meeting at City Hall to bring together:

  • Local nonprofits
  • City of Colfax
  • Business owners
  • Residents of all ages
  • Anyone passionate about Colfax’s future

The meeting will focus on:

  1. Community Outreach Plans – Reaching every household and business in Colfax.
  2. Social Media Campaigns – Leveraging Facebook, Instagram, and local groups to spread the word fast.
  3. Vote Collection Strategies – Making it easy and convenient for every supporter to cast their vote.

We already have a framework for this campaign, but we need voices, hands, and hearts from across the community to make it happen.

Our Mission: Breathing New Life into Downtown Colfax

The Historic Colfax Downtown Association’s mission is clear:

To breathe new life into downtown Colfax by honoring its history, uplifting its people, and creating spaces where community can truly take root.

Colfax is a town built on grit and rooted in history—a place where stories still matter. We believe true revitalization happens when those stories are preserved, when neighbors are connected, and when every person feels like they are part of that legacy.

With this grant, we can take a giant step toward transforming Colfax into a bustling, connected, and economically strong hub in Placer County—one that honors the past while building an exciting future.

Ways to support Colfax CA during the Levitt Grant voting period

  • Mark Your Calendar: Voting runs September 5–15, 2025.
  • Spread the Word: Tell friends, family, and colleagues—every vote matters.
  • Join the Meeting: Help us refine our outreach plan and get involved.
  • Follow Us on Social Media: Stay updated on voting instructions and events.

Together, we can make Colfax a shining example of how small towns can achieve big dreams.

Colfax stands on the brink of something transformative. Winning the Levitt AMP Music Series Grant means more than just concerts—it’s about revitalization, community pride, and economic opportunity. We’ve come this far against all odds. Now, with your help, we can take the final step and secure a future filled with music, connection, and prosperity for our historic downtown.
