The first-ever Colfax Bazaar turned out to be more than just a market

Colfax Bazaar Recap – A Big Win for Downtown Colfax

The first-ever Colfax Bazaar turned out to be more than just a market—it was a celebration of history, community, and the promise of a bright future for downtown Colfax, CA. On Saturday, August 2, 2025, the Historic Fruit Exchange Building came alive with energy it hadn’t seen in over a decade, as more than 1,000 visitors strolled through a vibrant marketplace filled with antiques, oddities, handcrafted goods, and local flavor.

From sunrise to closing, the event drew shoppers, treasure hunters, collectors, and curious first-time visitors, all eager to explore this unique Gold Rush town and its hidden gems.

Many attendees commented that they had never been to Colfax before, and several left saying they would absolutely return. That’s exactly the kind of lasting impact this event aimed to create.

Breathing New Life Into a Historic Landmark

The Colfax Bazaar was created with a clear purpose: to bring fresh energy into downtown Colfax while honoring the town’s rich heritage. By hosting the event inside and around the Historic Fruit Exchange Building, we not only gave people a chance to shop, eat, and enjoy live music—we gave them a reason to step inside a landmark that has been part of Colfax’s story for over a century.

For years, the building saw minimal activity. But on Bazaar day, it was buzzing with conversation, laughter, and the sounds of live music drifting down Main Street. This wasn’t just an event—it was the embodiment of the Historic Colfax Downtown Association’s mission:

To breathe new life into downtown Colfax by honoring its history, uplifting its people, and creating spaces where community can truly take root.

20 Vendors, Unlimited Discoveries

The inaugural Colfax Bazaar featured 20 carefully selected vendors alongside the permanent tenants of the Fruit Exchange Building, creating a marketplace that blended old-world charm with modern creativity. Shoppers could browse:

  • Vintage furniture and home décor with authentic Gold Rush-era character
  • Handmade crafts and artisan goods inspired by rustic mountain living
  • Repurposed and upcycled treasures with a story to tell
  • Oddities and unique collectibles for those who love the unusual
  • Local art and photography capturing the spirit of Colfax and the Sierra foothills

Every booth offered something special—whether it was a one-of-a-kind conversation piece or a beautifully restored antique. And because vendors were handpicked, the quality and variety kept visitors engaged from start to finish.

Media Spotlight Brings Regional Attention

One of the standout moments of the day was our live feature on Good Day Sacramento with Cody Sparks. The Colfax Bazaar was showcased in four to five news segments throughout the morning, giving thousands of viewers across the Sacramento region a look at what makes our town special.

The exposure brought even more visitors, helped local vendors make sales, and put downtown Colfax on the map for people who may have never heard of it before. We are deeply grateful to Cody Sparks and the Good Day team for shining a spotlight on our efforts.

Why This Event Matters for Colfax

The Colfax Bazaar was about more than just buying and selling—it was about revitalization. For years, the Historic Fruit Exchange Building has been a reminder of Colfax’s past. On this day, it became a bridge to its future.

This event honored the grit and history of our Gold Rush roots while creating a space for connection, commerce, and community pride. It showed that Colfax can be a bustling, connected, and economically strong hub in Placer County without losing the character that makes it unique.

Through gatherings like this, we are not just preserving history—we are writing the next chapter of it.

Looking Ahead

The incredible response to our first Colfax Bazaar proved one thing—this event is here to stay. And the good news? You won’t have to wait long for the next one. Mark your calendar for Saturday, November 8, 2025, when we’ll return to the Historic Fruit Exchange Building with even more vendors, fresh finds, and new ways to experience the magic of historic downtown Colfax.

We’re planning a bigger, better lineup filled with antiques, oddities, handmade treasures, local flavors, and live entertainment that will keep you shopping, exploring, and connecting all day long. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning fan, you’ll find something new to love.

Don’t miss your chance to be part of the next chapter in Colfax’s story. Sign up now at TheColfaxBazaar.com to get updates, vendor announcements, and early bird entry details.

Instead of holding our breath for funding, we decided to move forward and bring music to Colfax now. That spark of determination is what gave life to Colfax’s Brews and Grooves, a reimagined version of the town’s former Oktoberfest celebration (formally put on by the Colfax Chamber), built on rhythm, community pride, and the unstoppable momentum of hope.

Colfax Farmers Market Launch Event with live music and local vendors

Colfax Farmers Market Launch Draws a Joyful Crowd to Historic Main Street

A charming evening of music, food, and community spirit

In the Sierra Nevada foothills City of Colfax, carries a legacy as rich as California’s Gold Rush era. Last Thursday, that history echoed joyfully along Main Street, as the Colfax Farmers Market kicked off its summer season with a launch event that was nothing short of spectacular.

From the moment the market opened, the atmosphere buzzed with energy. The scent of fresh-baked pastries danced in the air. Families strolled leisurely with their children. Neighbors laughed in reunion. And local solo guitarist strummed soul-soothing tunes under golden light. This wasn’t just a market—it was a celebration of community, heritage, and the power of gathering at the Colfax Farmers Market.

Music, Meals, and Market Magic

As the sun dipped behind the historic rooftops of Colfax, the soft strumming of a live acoustic guitarist drifted through the air, adding a layer of warmth that wrapped around the crowd like a familiar melody. The music wasn’t just background noise—it was the heartbeat of the evening, inviting visitors to pause, listen, and truly take in the experience of the Colfax Farmers Market.

But the true surprise of the evening? A local artisan baker whose table emptied almost as fast as it was stocked. Her sourdough loaves became the talk of the market, selling out long before twilight at Colfax Farmers Market. What an afternoon deeply rooted in Colfax’s community spirit.

Last Thursday’s Colfax Farmers Market launch event was more than a success—it was a revival. Colfax Farmers Market returns

How the Colfax Farmers Market Helps Our Local Economy Thrive

Here in Colfax, CA, we know that a strong community starts with strong local connections — between our people, our businesses, and the land that sustains us. That’s why the Historic Colfax Downtown Association is so excited to celebrate the return of the Colfax Farmers Market, proudly organized by the dedicated team at the Sierra Vista Community Center.

Starting May 15th, and running every Thursday evening from 4:00 PM to 7:30 PM on Main Street in Downtown Colfax, this seasonal market isn’t just about fresh vegetables and handmade crafts (though you’ll find plenty of those!). It’s about creating meaningful economic opportunities that support local families, small business owners, and the long-term health of our community.

The Power of Buying Local

When you shop at the Colfax Farmers Market, you aren’t just purchasing a basket of tomatoes or a loaf of artisan bread. You’re putting your dollars directly into the hands of local farmers, crafters, bakers, and entrepreneurs who live and work right here in our region. These small-scale producers reinvest those earnings back into our local economy — whether that’s through purchasing supplies from nearby businesses, hiring local help, or spending their income at other shops and restaurants in town.

Research consistently shows that money spent at local markets circulates within the community longer than dollars spent at big-box stores or chain retailers. For every $100 spent locally, up to $68 stays right here in the local economy, compared to only $43 when spent at non-local businesses. This ripple effect means stronger job creation, increased economic resilience, and more opportunities for everyone in our town.

A Platform for Entrepreneurs and Startups

The Colfax Farmers Market also serves as an incubator for new ideas and small businesses. For many local makers and growers, the market provides their first opportunity to test products, build a customer base, and receive direct feedback from shoppers. It’s a low-barrier entry point that allows budding entrepreneurs to start small, grow sustainably, and establish lasting relationships within the community.

Whether it’s a young farmer debuting their first crop, an artisan introducing a new handmade product, or a local chef serving up ready-to-eat meals, the market creates space for innovation and creativity. These ventures might someday expand into storefronts, restaurants, or larger operations — all starting right here on Main Street at the farmers market.

Bringing Traffic and Energy to Downtown

Beyond the direct benefits to vendors, the Colfax Farmers Market draws foot traffic to Downtown Colfax, bringing visitors and residents alike into the heart of our town. This consistent flow of people on Thursday evenings not only supports the farmers and crafters at the market itself but also benefits nearby local shops, restaurants, and service providers.

More visitors downtown means more sales, more conversations, and more opportunities for our small businesses to connect with customers. The vibrant energy the market brings helps make downtown Colfax a destination — not just for shopping, but for community gathering and shared experiences.

A Healthier, More Resilient Colfax

Of course, the economic benefits are only one part of the story. A thriving farmers market contributes to public health by improving access to fresh, nutritious foods. It fosters environmental sustainability by reducing the need for long-distance shipping and packaging. Most importantly, it strengthens the social fabric of our community by creating a welcoming space where neighbors meet, stories are shared, and relationships grow.

All of these pieces work together to create a healthier, more resilient local economy — one that can better withstand challenges and continue to serve the people who call Colfax home.

Thank You to the Sierra Vista Community Center

We at the Historic Colfax Downtown Association would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the Sierra Vista Community Center for their leadership and hard work in organizing the Colfax Farmers Market. Their efforts make this event possible and help ensure its continued success as an economic engine and gathering place for our town.

We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to the City of Colfax and the Colfax City Council for their generous support of the Colfax Farmers Market. This year, the City Council voted to grant $2,500 toward the success of this important community event. Their commitment to supporting local agriculture, small businesses, and downtown vitality plays a vital role in making the farmers market possible. This funding helps ensure that we can continue to provide a welcoming, well-organized, and vibrant space for both vendors and visitors, contributing directly to the economic health and community spirit of Colfax.

Join Us This Season

We invite everyone to join us downtown for the Colfax Farmers Market — every Thursday evening from May 15th through the season, right on South Main Street between Grass Valley Street and Church. Come meet the vendors, discover local goods, and be part of this important tradition that helps keep Colfax vibrant and thriving.

Together, by supporting local growers, makers, and small businesses, we are investing in the future of our community — and we couldn’t be prouder to share in that mission.

This vote of confidence from city leadership represents a growing awareness of the importance of grassroots efforts and green spaces in our community’s well-being.

Celebrating Colfax’s Agricultural Heritage

Did you know that Colfax has deep agricultural roots that date back to the late 1800s? Once a bustling hub along the Transcontinental Railroad, the town played a key role in the movement of produce, timber, and livestock throughout California.

Historic crops included grapes, apples, pears, and even hops, with nearby homesteads and ranches sustaining generations of families. The Colfax Outfielders’ Community Garden is a modern-day homage to that legacy — breathing new life into our soil and traditions.

Why This Event Matters for Colfax CA

At its heart, this fundraiser is about more than just good food. It’s about fostering a sense of place, belonging, and responsibility. The benefits ripple far beyond the garden beds:

  • Empowering local volunteers and youth
  • Promoting healthy eating and sustainability
  • Bringing neighbors together in shared purpose

Each dollar raised helps grow not only plants, but people.

Preserving Colfax: A Mission to Honor Our Past and Build Our Future

Colfax, California, is a town deeply rooted in history. From its pivotal role in the Gold Rush era to its status as a key junction for the Central Pacific Railroad, our community has a rich legacy that deserves recognition and preservation. At the Historic Colfax Downtown Association (HCDA), our mission is to honor this past while ensuring a thriving future for generations to come.

Why Historic Preservation Matters

Preserving historic buildings and districts isn’t just about nostalgia; it’s about community identity, economic opportunity, and sustainability. A well-preserved downtown enhances the character of a city, attracts tourism, and provides financial incentives for property owners. Here’s why historic designation is crucial:

Financial Incentives – Properties designated as historic can qualify for tax credits, grants, and funding opportunities that support restoration and maintenance.

Flexible Building Codes – The California Historical Building Code provides owners with cost-effective alternatives to modern building regulations, making preservation more attainable.

Increased Property Value – Historic designation enhances a property’s marketability while maintaining the town’s unique charm.

Economic Revitalization – A thriving historic downtown encourages business investment, attracts visitors, and fosters a strong sense of community pride.

At HCDA, we are dedicated to revitalizing and preserving Downtown Colfax. We believe that through education, community engagement, and proactive restoration efforts, we can make Colfax a landmark destination in the Sierra Foothills.

Colfax CA Arts Month: Join the Community Meeting to Plan the Future of Local Arts

A Town on the Brink of an Arts Renaissance 🎭🎨

Not long ago, Colfax California was a town where history whispered through the walls of its buildings, where echoes of a once-thriving community still lingered. But something has been stirring beneath the surface—something electric.

It started with an idea.

A few passionate voices spoke up: What if we could bring the arts back to Colfax? What if we transformed blank walls into murals, empty stages into thriving performance spaces, and quiet nights into cultural experiences?

And now, here we are. On the cusp of something big.

On February 27th, the Historic Colfax Downtown Association (HCDA) is calling on dreamers, doers, and creatives to join us for a community meeting that could change everything.

Imagine walking down Main Street, past vibrant murals painted by local artists. Imagine the Historic Colfax Theatre alive with music, laughter, and storytelling. Imagine a town that doesn’t just remember its history—but makes new history every day.

This meeting isn’t just about planning an event. It’s about shaping the future.
